phrase with a single argument structure. Complex predicates of this sort are found in Japanese, Turkish, and Persian, among many others. Since complex predicates are so generally available, they must be the result of very general linguistic processes, which I will propose are part of syntax and the syntax/interpretative interface, or logical form. In this paper I consider two kinds of syntactic derivation, incorporation and argument merger, or formation of a composite argument structure. The goal of this analysis is to show how N and V contribute to the properties of the complex predicate, and to derive the right phrase structure, case and agreement properies. Complex predicates form a large and productive part of the verbal lexicon of Hindi/Urdu (1)-(2):

Urdu/Hindi Motion Verbs and Their Implementation in a Lexical Resource

A central task of natural language processing is to find a way of answering the question Who did what to whom, how, when and where? with automatic means. This requires insights on how a language realizes events and the participants that partake in them and how this information can be encoded in a humanas well as machine-readable way. In this thesis, I investigate the ways that the spatial notio...

Encoding event structure in Urdu/Hindi VerbNet

We propose a new kind of event structure representation for computational linguistics, based on the theoretical framework of FirstPhase Syntax (Ramchand, 2008). We show that the approach not only gives a theoretically well-motivated set of subevents and related semantic roles, it also posits the levels of representation needed for analyzing a linguistic phenomenon that has repeatedly caused pro...

A Hybrid Model for Urdu Hindi Transliteration

We report in this paper a novel hybrid approach for Urdu to Hindi transliteration that combines finite-state machine (FSM) based techniques with statistical word language model based approach. The output from the FSM is filtered with the word language model to produce the correct Hindi output. The main problem handled is the case of omission of diacritical marks from the input Urdu text. Our sy...

Towards Identifying Hindi/Urdu Noun Templates in Support of a Large-Scale LFG Grammar

Complex predicates (CPs) are a highly productive predicational phenomenon in Hindi and Urdu and present a challenge for deep syntactic parsing. For CPs, a combination of a noun and light verb express a single event. The combinatorial preferences of nouns with one (or more) light verb is useful for predicting an instance of a CP. In this paper, we present a semi-automatic method to obtain noun g...

Computational evidence that Hindi and Urdu share a grammar but not the lexicon

Hindi and Urdu share a grammar and a basic vocabulary, but are often mutually unintelligible because they use different words in higher registers and sometimes even in quite ordinary situations. We report computational translation evidence of this unusual relationship (it differs from the usual pattern, that related languages share the advanced vocabulary and differ in the basics). We took a GF...
